Johns Hopkins and Penn Event: Leonardo to the Internet - Prospects for the Future?
We are very excited to have Johns Hopkins University Press author and University of Minnesota professor Thomas Misa leading a joint event by Johns Hopkins and Penn clubs on Wednesday, May 2. Dr. Misa specializes in the interactions of technology and modern culture, and is an amazing speaker on the subject. Prior to Dr. Misa's presentation, we will have socializing/dinner and a unique tour of the obscure and interesting parts of the U of M's Andersen Library.
Our presentation will survey a dizzying half-millennium of interactions between technology and culture, with attention to contemporary trends in globalization and systemic risk. If our future is made by technology, how have we arrived at this moment in history? Our speaker, Thomas J. Misa is a historian specializing in the interactions of technology and modern culture. His undergraduate degree is from M.I.T. (1981) and his Ph.D. from University of Pennsylvania (1987). Since 2006 he has served as director of the Charles Babbage Institute, holding the ERA Land-Grant Chair in History of Technology with an appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and teaching in the Program for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine. He has published two books with Johns Hopkins including "Leonardo to the Internet: Technology and Culture from the Renaissance to the Present" (http://tinyurl.com/85fraaf).
In addition to the professor's talk, join us for a guided behind-the-scenes tour of the unique underground caverns, two football fields in length, that are hidden beneath Andersen Library. See where 18-wheeler trucks can unload an entire library of books for temporary storage, while inside fragile manuscripts and the region's historical documents are safely housed in a climate-controlled environment.
